Gillian has an undergraduate degree in Zoology with Evolutionary Psychology from the University of Liverpool, and is currently studying part-time for her MSc at Brunel University, while working as a Communications Manager at the Department of Health. Her interests include science communication, science policy, ethics, conservation biology, animal behaviour and evolutionary psychology. She is a Brunel University representative on the committee of the London Evolutionary Research Network.
Gillian is currently Communications Manager for the Department of Health Professional Leadership Team in the Chief Nursing Officer’s Directorate. She is also one of the UK coordinators for the volunteer organisation Yearoutindia. She has been a fundraiser and operational marketing assistant for the British Red Cross in Wales and was Director of science think tank Newton's Apple, before taking on her current role at the Department of Health. She has also been lucky enough to have had work experience with the BBC Specialist Factual and Learning Department, BBC Focus Magazine, Buzz Magazine and the Science Media Centre.
Gillian was awarded commendations by the British Neuroscience Association for her National Brain Science Writing Prize article on faces and the brain. She has also written articles for BBC Focus Magazine, Buzz Magazine, and the British Association for Advancement of Science’s Science and Public Affairs. She has edited a number of publications including the Allied Health Professionals Bulletin, the Chief Nursing Officer’s Bulletin and various research reports including Cancer Vision 2025 and Cancer Innovation; Delivering Innovative Cancer Diagnostics and Treatments to Patients.
